Senior Producer, BBC Broadcast Ltd, I manage an operation delivering
live and pre-recorded subtitles on 80% of core BBC programming. We also
subtitle 17 separate regional variations of BBC output and up to 15
hours a day of rolling news on the BBC's continuous news channel.
I led the project to introduce the use of speech recognition to our
live subtitling operation, and our first realtime speech broadcast was
in April 2001. We now have 30 people using speech recognition to cover
news, sport and parliamentary programming at around 97% accuracy. We
are planning to expand this capacity significantly over the next 12
months.
As for the presentation, I intend to show a VHS of our live speech recognition in practice and talk through the BBC targets and how we intend to achieve them:
