VOICE Project
The Media
and the needs of people with different abilities
Television, cinema and theatre

Media is a broad term including several sectors. Some of them are easily accessible for people with hearing impairment, such as the newspaper, while others, like the radio, are not accessible at all.
Cinema, television and theatre are characterised by two components: image and audio. The first one may be fully used by a hearing impaired spectator; the second one may be replaced by other communication means, first of all the subtitling for people with hearing impairment.
This Section presents the needs of people with hearing impairment in the field of television, cinema and theatre, the solutions adopted in some Italian or foreign situations and the present stage of research.

Several Universities started a few years ago the training courses about the subtitling and are developing projects with particular care to the specific aspects of services for people with hearing impairment. The VOICE Project established a collaboration with the High School of Modern Languages for Interpreters and Translators in Forlì and the Institut Supérieur de Traducteurs et Interprètes of Brussels, and created the contacts with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona:
